Neighborhood

Noe Valley

Where do San Francisco hipsters move when they grow up? Noe Valley. This small enclave nestled in the hills above San Francisco Bay is proof positive you don't have to leave the city when you transition from Stoli to stroller. Jaw-dropping views of the bay looking east toward Oakland greet you from almost any street corner. Boutiques are chockablock here. With bakeries like Noe Valley Baking Company and restaurants that have become beloved neighborhood institutions, like Firefly and La Ciccia, Noe Valley is paradise for foodies. Thanks to the Noe Valley Farmers market, locals never have to leave the neighborhood to get their fix of fresh organic vegetables, fruit and honey.

The neighborhood is named after José de Jesús Noé, the last Mexican alcalde (mayor) of Yerba Buena (present day San Francisco), who owned what is now Noe Valley as part of his Rancho San Miguel. Noé sold the land, later to be known as Noe Valley, to John Meirs Horner, a Mormon immigrant, in 1854. At this time the land was called Horner's Addition. The original Noé adobe house was located in the vicinity of the present day intersection of 23rd Street and Douglass Street. Along with nearby neighborhood Corona Heights, Noe Valley was the site of two quarries until 1914. Noe Valley was primarily developed at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, especially in the years just after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. As a result, the neighborhood contains many examples of the "classic" Victorian and Edwardian residential architecture for which San Francisco is famous.

Today, Noe Valley stretches from 22nd Street in the north to Randall Street in the south, and from Grand View Avenue in the east to San Jose Avenue in the west. The majority of shops and restaurants run along 24th Street between Church and Diamond streets, and on Church Street between 24th and 30th Streets - the southern part of the neighborhood fondly known as "Upper Noe" and home to the popular Upper Noe Recreation Center whose amenities include children's playground, dog run, and an indoor gym. St. Paul's Catholic Church, also known as Parroquia De San Pablo, is a famous church located at Church and Valley Street. It was the filming location for the movie Sister Act.

Noe Valley is easily accessible to all points around the neighborhood and city. The J Church Muni Light Rail connects residents to downtown/ Embarcadero Station, and the 24 Muni bus winds through Noe Valley heading south to Bayview and north to Pacific Heights. The major technology shuttle buses also stop along Noe Valley, and its more southern location allows for easy freeway access.

Some of the best public schools in the city are here in Noe Valley. Fairmount Elementary School and Alvarado Elementary School are both notable for their levels of family involvement. James Lick Middle School prepares students with language immersion programs, award winning art, music, and media programs. And the test scores are above 600 on the California Academic Performance Index (API).

Nightlife? Got it. From the divey Valley Tavern to the awesome selection of imported beers at The Dubliner, Noe Valley is increasingly known for its nightlife. For live music check out Noe Valley Ministry, presenter of world class performers in folk, world music and the alt-rock scene. Noe Valley is that prized thing in San Francisco: a place where families can put down roots, straight through its well-traveled sidewalks.
